The darker the color, the more favorable the climate conditions are for survival. The outlined areas represent approximate current range for each season. More on reading these maps.
Given its wide geographic range, it is not surprising that the White-breasted Nuthatch exhibits extensive variation in plumage, morphology, ecology, and vocalizations. Indeed, this nuthatch is believed by many ornithologists to be a complex of two, three, or even four distinct species. Audubon's climate model forecasts a 78 percent loss of current summer range by 2080, with substantial range shift northward. Comparatively little change is forecast in winter. But it is important to keep in mind that geographically distinctive populations are represented. The model aggregates all the populations, but wildlife managers and conservation biologists should consider them separately.
