The darker the color, the more favorable the climate conditions are for survival. The outlined areas represent approximate current range for each season. More on reading these maps.
The Reddish Egret specializes in hunting in estuaries and on coastal mudflats. While it is occasionally found wandering to the interior, a large-scale shift to freshwater habitat, as is suggested by Audubon’s climate model, is quite unlikely, regardless of future climate. Even if the climate space is favorable, this egret is closely tied with salt water habitats. Of particular concern is the significant reduction of current area that will remain available to this species, both in summer and winter.
